Sinus infection or sinusitis is inflammation of the sinuses. Sinuses are the hollow cavities in the bones around the nose. When these sinuses get inflamed because of some viral or fungal infection, it results in blockage of air or mucus inside, which causes lot of pain and discomfort, often known as a sinus attack. Sinus infections are very common and millions of people are attacked each year.

There are three kinds of sinus attacks: acute, chronic, and recurring. Acute sinus attacks are severe and last for around three weeks. Chronic attacks are more severe and last for three to eight weeks or more. Recurring sinus infections, on the other hand, are those that frequently appear over a period of time. Medication is given according to the kind of attack. Chronic sinus infections need prolonged treatment, whereas normal sinus infections can be treated with over-the-counter drugs.

There are many home remedies for treating sinus infections. Though these remedies may not provide any lasting cure, they definitely give some relief. Some common home remedies are: steam inhalation, hot or a cold compress over the inflamed area, a decoction of mustard seed powder and water instilled in the nostrils, consumption of jalapeno peppers, consumption of the juice of ripe grapes, application of a paste of cinnamon and water on the forehead, application of a paste of ginger and water/milk on the forehead, application of a paste of basil leaves, cloves and dried ginger on the forehead, inhalation of steam from eucalyptus oil, warm tea, and so on.

Medication also depends on the actual cause of the sinus infection. Sometimes, sinus infections are a result of some other ailments like asthma, allergic rhinitis, allergies to fungi, primary immune deficiency, HIV infection, cystic fibrosis and others. These infections have to be treated before treating the sinusitis itself. Medication for sinusitis usually involves a decongestant to clear the sinuses, an antibiotic to fight the infection, and a pain killer. Decongestant can be in the form of tablet or nasal spray. Some chronic cases can be treated using steroids like prednisone. However, steroids are not generally preferred because of the possible side effects. Acute or chronic sinus infections may require prolonged therapies like saline nasal rinses, topical/oral decongestants, antihistamines, mucolytic agents, and intranasal corticosteroids. Sinus infections that cannot be cured by medication require surgery. Functional endoscopic sinus surgery is a common surgery for enlarging the sinus openings and allowing drainage.

Sinus infection, also known as sinusitis, is an infection that affects the sinuses in the body. Sinuses are the hollow spaces or cavities near the bones in the skull around the nose. Sinusitis is the swelling of these sinuses because of some allergic or immune reaction that causes the sinuses to be blocked. This blockage causes air to be trapped inside the sinuses along with other secretions like pus, putting pressure on the sinus walls. This pressure produces pain and a lot of discomfort, often referred to as a sinus attack. Sinus infection is a very common allergy that affects million of people throughout the world every year. Millions of dollars are spent for sinus medications and sinus research. Sinus infections may occur because of some viral or fungal infections.

There are different kinds of sinuses: frontal sinuses (over the eyes in the brow area), maxillary sinuses (inside each cheekbone), ethmoid sinuses (just behind the bridge of the nose and between the eyes), and sphenoid sinuses (behind the ethmoids in the upper region of the nose and behind the eyes). Any part of these four sinuses can be infected, causing pain in that particular area. The most common symptoms of sinus infections are pain in the head, ear or neck; headaches early in the morning; pain in the upper jaw/ cheeks/ teeth; swelling of the eyelids; pain between the eyes; stuffy nose; loss of smell; and tenderness near the nose. Sometimes, there could be fever, tiredness, weakness, severe cough, and runny nose. Very rarely, acute sinusitis can lead to infection in the brain or some other complications.

There are three kinds of sinus attacks: acute (up to three weeks), chronic (three to eight weeks or more), and recurring (frequent attacks within a year). Most sinus attacks start because of a viral cold. Fungal infections can also cause sinusitis, especially in people who have weak immune systems and are prone to allergies. Infections like hay fever or allergic rhinitis can also lead to acute sinusitis. People with weak immune systems, like those with HIV infection, and those who have mucus secretion abnormalities are also more prone to sinusitis.

The most common treatment for sinusitis is a decongestant to reduce the congestion in the nose, antibiotics for the infection, and pain relievers for any pain. There are over-the-counter decongestants and sprays available that can provide some relief. However, these should be used only for a few days. It is advisable to consult a specialist if the infection exists for long time. Acute sinusitis can be treated with antibiotics and decongestants but chronic sinusitis takes a longer time and is usually difficult to treat because it could be linked to some other infection like asthma. In such cases, doctors may also prescribe steroids for relief. Some people may also require surgery.

There are also easy home remedies for providing relief from sinusitis. Inhaling steam, saline nasal spray, gentle heat application over the inflamed area, lying down in a darkened room, decoction of mustard seeds and water instilled in the nostrils, drinking juice of ripe grapes, jalapeno pepper, inhalation of peppermint steam, applying a paste of cinnamon and water or dry ginger and water, etc. are some of the most commonly used home remedies for sinus infections.

Muscles are made up of elastic fibers that not only give general shape to the body, but also contract to move its various parts. The body gets its frame and shape from the skeleton muscles. These are voluntary muscles. The contraction of these muscles is consciously determined by the living being. In other words, living beings have total control over their body.

But sometimes, these voluntary muscles contract involuntarily. In the process, they tighten the muscles and generate pain, making it hard to move that part of the body. This kind of untimely involuntary, violent contraction or knot in the muscles is called a Muscle Spasm.

In short, muscles flex and extend in the affected part of the body at the same time. This generally results when the muscle is under ‘pressure’ or is overused. A Muscle Spasm attacks a whole joint, leaving that part of the voluntary muscle in a state of ’shock’ for some time. It may begin as an awkward sensation that soon spreads in the affected area. The muscles in that whole area then become so tight and stiff that they hurt severely. The most recommended instant aid is to put ice on the affected area, and stretch it. Muscle Spasms mainly affect arm, neck, leg and other such joints that are flexible to reflexes and movements.

Muscle Spasms mostly occur due to excessive use of the muscles. This may be strenuous exercise, stress, muscle fatigue caused by unused muscles for sometime, and dehydration resulting from loss of body fluid. Muscle Spasm may occur from an injury, accident or even muscle diseases. It may also occur if one does not make use of the body muscles and joints regularly, affecting its function. For instance, many older people restrict the movement of their body. This makes the usually flexible, voluntary muscles and joints become rigid. As a result, any minor stimulation makes them susceptible to spasms. Hence, in order to reduce the chances of Muscle Spasms or cure an attacked body part, one needs to follow a range of stretch exercises. There is supportive medication for Muscle Spasms. But the best method is to take a balanced diet, follow an exercise regime, and check on stress and strain. There should also be the required amount of calcium, phosphate, sodium, magnesium and other essential vitamins and minerals in the diet. Even though Muscle Spasms are known to cause tight knots in the muscles, reducing flexibility to control movements voluntarily, it is found to retain the muscle strength intact.

A human body gets its shape and all possible flex movements due to the presence of muscles. The contraction of the muscles voluntarily helps in moving the legs or hands while walking, or to turn the neck when somebody calls from behind. The muscles are made up of elastic fibers that make these movements possible.

Yet these bands of fibers are prone to wear are tear when exerted without giving it a proper ‘warm up’. Not only this, the muscles have a certain limit to flex and beyond that it gets ‘overstretched’. Also, there are problems in situations where the less flexible muscles are put to use. In other words, when a person suddenly tries to put a certain body part to action without giving the related muscles the right conditioning, there are good chances that the muscles will tear.

This kind of tear or injury caused in the muscle is called a Pulled Muscle. For instance, an athlete who practices high jumps without a proper warm up session ends up with a Pulled Muscle in the thigh. In a human body, muscles are attached to bones, muscles and organs with soft tissues called tendons, ligaments and fascia. A muscle pull may be said to occur when the tendon or the ligament tears. That is, Pulled Muscles may occur if muscle attached to the bones, muscles or even organs gets injured or torn.

A Pulled Muscle makes it difficult to move the swollen and bruised affected area. The best suggested aid is to use ice in the affected area and give proper rest to that affected limb. A Pulled Muscle affects those muscles that are injured in an accident, careless overstretching or excessive use through physical activities such as sports, exercises and exerting less flexible body parts.

It is very essential to maintain the strength and flexibility of muscles, to exercise to condition them, and to supply the right nutrition for the body to be in good shape.

The human body consists of various systems performing a multitude of functions. Every action is determined and stimulated as per the nervous system. Similarly, the actions to move a limb or any other body part are conditioned by the muscular system. Muscle, known for its elasticity, contracts to help the various body movements. Not only this, muscles also determine the shape of the human body. It is. therefore, necessary to keep the muscles in shape, for an active and proper functioning of the body. This can be achieved by Building Muscles.

Building Muscles help to break down fat and maintain a healthy body. In the human body muscle tissues are re-built from the broken down muscle tissues. The muscle gains in mass when the breakdown activity or catabolism is overtaken by re-building activity or anabolism. Muscles build up with the increase in muscle mass or fibers.

With the growing awareness of the importance of exercises to “look good and feel good”, more and more people are going in for Building Muscles. Exercises varying from aerobic and cardiovascular to weight training help to Build Muscles. A regular practice improves blood circulation and supplies oxygen to nourish muscles. This will help to burn fat and Build Muscles.

The exercise is supplemented with a diet rich in carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin D, E, B, calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, sodium and potassium. Of course, water is equally important to prevent electrolyte or mineral salt (loss in potassium, sodium) imbalance of the body, and dehydration.

Muscles are the powerhouses that burn calories. So a body with more muscles means the body burns more fat and increases bone density. An aging body especially tends to gain fat and weight, affecting muscles. Therefore, one needs to build muscles as a precaution to prevent ill health and prevent chances of osteoporosis. But in case of body builders, they take up weight training, a good calorie diet with proper rest to Build Muscles. They also take supplements to increase muscle mass by improving muscle growth. These may vary from ordinary health drinks to steroids and growth hormone injections.

The human body is a complex system. It consists of cells or small units that are organized to function together. Every body function is coordinated by the nerve cells in the brain, whether it is movement of the eyes or the heartbeat. In the body, Muscles are one of the most important constituents. They account for 40 percent of body weight. These are the tissues or materials with specialized cells. Muscles are made up of elastic fibers that can contract and relax. The contractile nature of Muscle makes possible various body movements, an upright posture and specific shape to a human body. For example, lifting a box involves the action of Muscles in the hands.

Muscle is the powerhouse of the body. It maintains body temperature as well as supplies energy from the stored glucose. That is, Muscles convert the carbohydrates received from the food to glycogen or glucose. It releases the stored glucose as energy, when a certain body part gets exhausted. Every organ in the body has specific Muscles connected to bones, Muscles and organs to help them perform their functions.

In a human body there are three types of muscles, namely, skeleton Muscles, smooth Muscles and cardiac Muscles. Skeleton Muscles are large Muscles and help the body to move. These Muscles are flexible and voluntary in nature. That is, human beings consciously control their movements. They are technically known as striated Muscles, as they appear striated when viewed under a microscope. Some of the common examples of skeleton or voluntary or striated Muscles are the Muscles in the hands and legs.

Smooth Muscles, on the other hand, are found in the stomach, digestive system, air passage and blood vessels. The third type of muscles, the cardiac Muscles, are found in the heart alone. Unlike the striated muscles, smooth and cardiac are non-striated muscles. These Muscles are involuntary in nature. That is, the movement of non-striated or involuntary muscles, such as the smooth and cardiac Muscles, are guided or automatically controlled by the nervous system.

Muscles are prone to wear and tear. It may happen due to overuse of muscles, Muscle fatigue caused from being in a dormant position, or dehydration caused from excessive loss of body fluids and essential minerals. It may also occur from diseases and an injury that damages certain areas in a muscle. Hence, in order to keep them flexible and in shape, one needs to exercise and practice a routine movement of all the voluntary muscles. There are more than 630 Muscles in a human body, and it is often said that not all Muscles function alike. ” It takes 17 Muscles to smile and 42 to frown”!

Upper back pains are not as common as lower back pains; they also do not have the host of causes that trigger lower back pain. But whenever they occur, they are equally painful in nature. Mainly two causes of upper back pain have been identified: muscular irritation in the myofascial region, a region comprising of neck and upper back; and joint dysfunction in this area. This could include an injury sustained by spinal discs in the upper back, but as evidence suggests, such injuries are rare, since this is the strongest and most stable portion of the spine and has no mobility at all. The thoracic region of the spinal column is referred to as the upper back.

Despite its low incidence, upper back pains have been on the rise in the recent times, a trend attributed to the frequent use of computers (and the abnormal sitting postures and strain resulting from computer use) in the workplaces. Even these complaints, however, have mostly pertained to the neck and shoulder regions rather than the thoracic region.

On account of the absence of rare pathological causes, most upper back pains can be managed by such practices as osteopathic or chiropractic manipulation, active and passive physical therapy, massage therapies, and acupuncture. Another benefit is stretching and strengthening exercises, which should be undertaken with the help of an expert physiotherapist. For quick relief, all these therapeutic modalities can be supplemented by use of safe and effective painkillers and anti-inflammatory medicines. Anti-inflammatory medicines help reduce the inflammation that results from muscular irritation and joint dysfunction.

If upper back pain persists for long, then causes such as a degenerated disc or herniated disc in the thoracic region should be investigated.

Different types of back pains have different types of causes, and to gain some relief, the cause rather than the symptom should be addressed. People suffering from back pain are often suggested by friends and relatives to have complete bed rest, which is a misconception. Mere bed rest would not be sufficient to alleviate back pain if there were a serious underlying cause, like bone degeneration, osteoarthritis, or a bone infection. On the other hand, there is nothing as good as having rest for some initial period (though not necessarily bed rest), if the pain has resulted on account of a stress or a strain.

In a case of back pain without a pathology, avoiding physical activity for some time helps relax the nerves and reduce swelling, if any, in the painful area. This can be eased further by using non-drug methods of pain relief like applying hot and cold compresses to the affected area. Cold compresses are recommended for use during the first two to three days, later followed by hot compresses. This technique relaxes the nerves that have become irritated, and allows for restful sleep. Since pains are normally associated with sleeplessness, during phases of sound sleep the body gets time to heal itself.

Another way of traditional pain relief, and probably the most widespread, is the use of painkillers. Almost everyone has his or her favorites among painkillers, and you can use yours. But if the pain persists, and there is no remarkable benefit from the painkillers, it is advisable to consult a doctor and seek advice. However, if the pain has been relieved, normal daily activity should be resumed gradually after two to three weeks.

However bad back pain might be, it needs good, judicious management. In case the pain is not the result of a serious underlying problem, self-help techniques mentioned above, timely use of painkillers, and plain commonsense can go a long way in providing quick relief. Despite these interventions, however, if the acuteness of the problem gives way to a chronic, unmanageable situation, expert medical help should be immediately sought.

The back is made up of several different bones, called vertebrae, which are stacked upon each other to form a strong column that supports the upper portion of the body. Bones near neck are called cervical vertebrae, those adjacent to chest are called thoracic vertebrae, those around the lower back are called lumbar vertebrae, and those at the back of pelvic are called sacrum and coccyx.

Most of the weight of the upper body is rests on the lumbar vertebrae, and it is here that most of the lower back pains are localized.

A number of medical and other factors contribute to the occurrence of lower back pain. These include injury to this portion of the spine, which could be either due to excessive strains, compressions, or factors related to the aging process, when bones tend to become weak and brittle. Disease like osteoarthritis (inflammation of the bone) and osteoporosis (reduction in bone mass) can cause severe lower back pains. Certain specific viral infections can also cause lower back pains. Recently, much research has been focused on a condition called cauda equine syndrome, in which vertebrae intrude into the spinal canal and compress highly sensitive spinal nerves and fibers in the lumbar and sacral region. Irritated nerves cause extreme pain in these regions and sometimes irreversible damage to the nerves.

On a physical level, a number of factors can be responsible for lower back pain. Chiefly, these include excessive body weight (which induces strain to the lower back), improper sitting or standing posture, and improper sleeping posture.

Lower back pain can be both acute and chronic. While the acute type lasts for a few days to a few weeks, chronic persists for three months or more. As far as the significance of lower back is concerned, both acute and chronic pains need timely investigation and treatment.

Statistics reveal that up to 85% of all people have back pain at any given time in their lives. Nearly 2% of all American workers get compensated for back-pain-related disabilities. Back pain can occur for several reasons like injury to the muscles on account of their overuse or otherwise, strains, or injury to the ligaments’ the fine, fibrous mass that support them. Back pain may be less when in a resting position but greater when the back is subjected to any hard or soft activity as reaching, twisting, or lifting.

Since the spine is an amazing combination of bones, ligaments, tendons, large muscles, and highly sensitive nerves, any abnormality or dysfunction in any of these structures can trigger back pains of low or high intensity. For example, pain could occur on account of any irritability perceived by the large or small nerves that pass through or along with the spine. If these nerves are strained, again back pain can occur. The spaces created between the discs of the spinal column, which have to be otherwise suitably aligned, can be a very troublesome cause of back pain.

Depending on the severity of back pain, it can be classified into three categories. Back pains lasting not more than three months are termed as acute. When back pain occurs repeatedly, it is known as recurrent back pain. And back pain lasting more than three months and that doesn’t improve within three to four weeks of medication, is considered as chronic back pain. More than 50 million Americans suffer from chronic pain. Such back pains are often traced to more serious underlying bone or joint problems or other path physiologies; these need a specialist’s intervention to treat.

Any such suspicion is ruled out by conducting an array of medical laboratory and imaging tests, including a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT) scan, bone scan, and X-ray.
